Non Scale Victory Friday + Dating Naked

Am I the only one that feels like this week was so long? I can’t believe that Monday was only four days ago. This has been a busy week with work, and my personal life with so much happening and changing. I am ready for the weekend! The fact it’s a three day weekend is just an added bonus!

Today’s non scale victory Friday will be a little different. There are definitely some victories, but also just some recaps on what happened this week.

  1. I went shopping with a friend of mine in Baltimore and while shopping a sales lady tried to figure out my size so she could pick out some clothes for me. She looked at me, paused, and said “I just can’t tell if you’re a small or a medium.” I definitely shrieked and then proceeded to yell “SHE THINKS I’M A SMALL!! DID YOU HEAR THAT?” I may or may not have completely freaked her out.
  2. I started grad school on Wednesday! After all the drama with how to pay for it, it’s all been resolved and I had my first class on Wednesday. I was definitely nervous going in, (I still am a little to be honest) but the first class wasn’t bad and I think it will be a positive thing for me.
  3. One of the things I was most nervous about with grad school is how it would affect my running and new healthy lifestyle. Well I started off strong. There are two hours between when I get off work and my class starts which is just enough time to go for a run around my work and shower. It wasn’t perfect but it was a start. I’m sure there will be a lot of shifting of my schedule and routine before I find the right balance, but that’s okay, the important thing is to work to find it.
  4. I had every intention of going to bed early on Wednesday night after my class, and then waking up going to work and then running on Thursday. Well I went to bed early with no problem, got a full eight hours, which was great, and then woke up with a headache and generally just feeling awful. I spent the whole of Thursday feeling kind of blah and ultimately decided to forgo running. I wish I could say I spent Thursday evening productively, but I instead did my laundry and ate dinner in front of the TV while watching Dating Naked (have you seen that show? It’s an absolute train wreck. But I couldn’t look away!) I never watch reality TV but I couldn’t resist last night.

Happy Friday!

Keep Calm and Run On!

“Everything happens for a reason, deep breath, repeat.” I feel like that’s all I’ve been repeating for the past 24 hours. Yesterday was a roller coaster of emotions. I had been hoping to start grad school this week but several things were up in the air that would determine whether or not I would be able to actually start. Most of these things required actually being able to pay for classes, you know, important things.

Without going into too much detail I got a lot of answers yesterday and not all of them made me happy, and now I have choices to make. I’ll still be going to class on Wednesday, since I’ll have time to drop the class after if I decide to, and that will afford me a little more time to make a decision.

Suffice it to say it was a lot to wrap my head around, and then to make matters worse, or better (I still really haven’t decided which yet), it was the start of an extremely busy week at work, so I had barely any time to think about all of it.

That means when I got home my mind couldn’t stop thinking, my stomach was sick and I really just wanted to curl up into a ball until the world, and all its problems, went away. If only, if only…

I didn’t do that, but I knew that I had to do something to get my mind off things if I had any hope in sleeping and so I realized it was 7:45, the sun hadn’t quite gone to bed yet and if I dressed really quickly I could get out and run for a half hour that I hadn’t originally planned on running.

I ran three miles and it was totally the right decision. I don’t think I realized how much pent up energy I had from the day. I had more stamina than usual and it was the first time in the entire day that my head wasn’t reeling from information overload. That felt amazing.

I realized after my run, that despite all the stress and fluctuating emotions of yesterday not once did I have even the slightest desire to turn to food as stress relief. Instead my first instinct was to run, which is a much healthier choice, and leaves me feeling better after as well!

Non Scale Victory Friday!

After a couple busy weeks it was nice to finally have a week that was relatively stress free without much going on. I have a fun weekend planned though. I’m excited to meet a friend of mine for happy hour tonight and then my boyfriend and I have tickets to see Miranda Lambert on Saturday.

Onto my non scale victories for the week:

  1. I’m working on how I view my results which I wrote about here. It’s not going to happen overnight but it was nice to be able to see progress in something that I really haven’t been able to before then.
  2. I went running twice this week despite having a lot of stupid things working against me (like forgetting to pack my sports bra meaning I had to go home and get it instead of going straight to the park).
  3. Grad school (hopefully) starts next week (long story) so I forwent one of my runs to spend an extra day with my boyfriend before my schedule picks up for the semester. The extra time was so nice and definitely needed.

That’s all there is! Share your non scale victories below. Happy Friday and have a terrific weekend!

Then and Now

So I’ve thrown away my scale. I stopped counting calories. I don’t use a tape measure to measure my various body parts unless I’m ordering clothes online. I’m running more, and incorporating other exercises into my routine (some more successfully than others!). I don’t eat when I’m sad, stressed out or angry anymore. I love the changes I’ve incorporated, and overall, I feel so much healthier.

That doesn’t stop the fact that I want to see results. This past weekend I confessed to my boyfriend that I was a bit discouraged. Lots of people have been telling me that I look great, I’m fitting into smaller clothes and most importantly I feel healthier. I’m proud of myself for not falling back into comfortable but unhealthy habits. However, I haven’t been able to see the changes.

I look in the mirror and I don’t see a difference. In my mind I look like I did before and while I’m certainly not negating the positive feedback I’ve gotten, it would be nice if I could see it myself.

It’s hard though, changes like this don’t happen overnight. I’m never going to go to sleep one size and wake up the next day smaller. It’s a subtle difference so when I look at myself in the mirror day to day it’s a lot harder to see a difference than when I have a friend that hasn’t seen me for a month or two.

My boyfriend was awesome, he listened to my frustration and then he sat me down in front of his computer and pulled up my Facebook page and proceeded to go through all my pictures from a year ago or more and then put them side by side with all the pictures that had been taken in the last few months (since I finished whole 30 and after).

Then and Now

It wasn’t immediate, but then I saw these pictures. Both pictures were taken from weddings. The one on the left from March 2013 and the on the right a little over a year later this past June. I think I look fabulous in both (never mind the hair in my eye on the left!) but there is definitely a difference in how I look. Yay for progress, and actually starting to see it!

Birthday Fun!

So I decided to take Monday off from the blog because I wanted a longer break for my birthday which was this past Saturday. I had a great weekend of celebrating despite a short five minutes when I woke up Saturday morning and realized that I could no longer identify as mid twenties, but life goes on.

On Friday night, my boyfriend took me to dinner at Chart House in Annapolis. Despite being an hour late for our reservation (oops!) we got to sit in the lounge and enjoy an amazing view!

The food wasn’t bad either, I got the Snapper Hemingway. After dinner it was off to the Annapolis Summer Garden Theater to see Spamalot! I was so excited to see this and it definitely exceeded expectations. This was my first time seeing the musical, but I’vew listened to the music lots, and seen Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which it is based off of.

On Saturday, I had some friends over to go jet skiing at my boyfriend’s house. It was perfect weather for water sports. Everything was great except when I was trying to help my boyfriend launch the jet skis in the water and I landed straight on my butt onto the hard concrete.

That’s what I get for trying to be helpful, a bruised tailbone that still hurts when I sit! Luckily my clumsiness had a small audience, only my boyfriend and someone waiting for him to launch the boat saw, everyone else at the party completely missed it. Whew!

I so didn’t want to go back to work on Monday! However, I at least had lunch with my coworkers to look forward to. We went to Founding Farmers and despite never drinking soda I got an orange soda after hearing that they make the sodas from scratch at the restaurant. I also went for the goat cheese ravioli despite not being a pasta eater. Both were terrific choices and definitely worth it.

Excuse the poor photography skills…

Then after work I ran 5 miles and it felt great! I plan to run a lot this week and I’m honestly excited about it. The weather has been so great and I’m hoping it stays that way!

Non Scale Victory Friday!

My Birthday is TOMORROW!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME! If you can’t tell, I’m excited. I had such a great week starting with the One Direction concert on Monday and I know it’ll only get better with this weekend. I have plans to see Spamalot with my boyfriend tonight and then having friends over to celebrate my birthday with a cookout and jet skiing.

Anyways onto non scale victory Friday!

  1. Despite being tired, and REALLY not wanting to, I dragged my butt out the door and went running on Wednesday.
  2. I have no idea how far I ran on Wednesday because I ran without a gps watch! Right when I was going out the door my watch began beeping at me to let me know it was low on battery. That’s what I get for not charging it for two weeks. Anyways it was kind of liberating to run without worrying about my pace or distance. (I mapped my route after and I think I ran 4.6 miles but I’m not certain that’s entirely accurate).
  3. For three nights this month I got over 8 hours of sleep! I felt so well rested, it was great!

Tell me about your non scale victories in the comments below! Have a great weekend!

One Direction!!

On Monday my friend and I went to the One Direction Concert in DC. We’ve been counting down the days ever since we got our tickets a few months ago and we were so excited when Monday finally arrived.

The concert was an experience to say the least. I have been to lots of concerts but I’ve never been to one in a stadium. As you can imagine the concert was completely sold out and all the attendees were preteen to teenage girls with a few parents interspersed for good measure.

We had a blast though! There was a little bit of rain, but it never down poured and I do wish that I had brought ear plugs (have you ever heard a stadium of girls screaming at the top of their lungs for a picture of One Direction being shown on a jumbotron, not to mention when they actually walk out on stage?). Still our seats were great and the show was terrific. I got some pictures, but unfortunately the zoom on my camera is awful so nothing up close. Besides I’m there to listen to music and enjoy, not take pictures and record.

We're so excited!

Unfortunately, the day after the concert I had to wake up really early for a work conference, and as a result was exhausted. So I decided to sleep instead of run after work, which was completely the right decision. I did go for a run yesterday which I am happy about but it looks like that’s all I’m going to get in for this week. Oh well! Sometimes it just doesn’t work out. I’ll be back at it next week in full force, and in the mean time I’ve been keeping up with my runtastic workouts!

I’m Running Further and Further!

Shopping, shopping and more shopping! I feel like all I’ve been talking about recently is how my boyfriend and I are shopping for furniture for his new place, because it feels like that’s ALL we’re doing! As you can probably guess, it was another long weekend of furniture shopping, but that’s not what I’m talking about today.

If you read my blog on Friday (and if you didn’t read it here) you noticed that I was very excited about my 7.5 mile run last Tuesday. That was a major accomplishment for me as it’s the furthest I’ve ever run. For me it was really a validation that all the hard work I’m putting in is paying off.

About a month ago I realized that while my stamina when running had increased my legs were giving out long before I was actually tired. That can be very frustrating, especially when it means you have to stop long before you’re actually ready to. It didn’t take me long to figure out that the reason for this was probably that my legs simply aren’t strong enough.

I focus so much time on cardio, because it’s what I love, and I tend to neglect strength training, because I hate it and find it so boring. What I love about running is that I can escape in my head and just think without interruption. I don’t listen to music while running because I don’t want that distraction. I don’t find strength training relaxing so I avoid it, but neglecting it comes with a price, and for me that meant weaker legs.

Anyways I started incorporating some body weight strength training and on Tuesday I was really excited to see how much of a difference just a week of this would do. Well it’s making a difference! My goal was to run until I couldn’t anymore. I ended up running 7.5 miles, the furthest I’ve ever gone! I stopped at 2.5 and 5 miles for water and to check my phone to see if my boyfriend had officially gotten his house yet, and then for the last 1.5 miles I started walking up all the hills and then running the rest.

I was, and am so proud of myself, but man was I exhausted. I immediately went home, showered, put on some compression sleeves and ate my dinner in front of the TV watching Gilmore Girls. I fell asleep at 10 pm and didn’t wake up until my alarm went off for work the next day.

Just what I needed!

Getting to experience exactly what my body is capable of is a great feeling and gives me so much motivation to keep pushing myself. Measuring success based on strength and overall health has managed to keep me more positive and on track than any number on a scale ever did. Plus any setbacks I experience aren’t such a big deal anymore, and that’s a great feeling!

Non Scale Victory Friday!

Did this week take forever for anyone else? I know it just seemed to drag for me! I am so ready for the weekend. My boyfriend and I have another weekend full of furniture shopping ahead of us. We’ll be checking out all the places we couldn’t get to last week. It’s fun, but exhausting for sure. On a bright side he got the house today! After a three month short sale he finally got the key to the house in his hand on Tuesday. It’s an exciting time!

Onto my non scale victories

  1. I ran three times this week! Three to four times a week tends to be my sweet spot with running. I may increase that frequency eventually but for now that’s where my body performs at its best.
  2. I ran 7.5 miles on Tuesday! That is the furthest I have ever run and I am so so proud of myself! I went into that run with the intention of pushing myself. I did, was successful and after was exhausted! More about this run on Monday, but until then check out my cool down with my new compression sleeves and Gilmore Girls.

  3. I’ve started incorporating some cross training exercises in my routine. I downloaded, and am using, a few Runtastic apps on my phone (specifically situps, push ups and squats) I found out about  them on Run Salt Run. Plus I’ve been doing a lot more stretching. I actually am attributing this change to the reason I was able to run 7.5 miles. My legs and core are already feeling much stronger.

As always post your non scale victories below, I love reading them! I know I didn’t post as much this week. I was trying to incorporate more running into my routine and writing took a back seat. I promise to be back at it next week! Anyways, have a great weekend!

Happy Monday!

I cannot believe it is already August! I feel like July just flew by. It’s been a busy time for my boyfriend and I recently. He is buying his first house soon and so it was a weekend of furniture shopping this weekend. We went so many places, and by the end of Sunday I was exhausted.

We found things we loved, things we hated, things we loved but he absolutely cannot afford ($10,000 couch anyone?) and sales people we never want to see again. We’ve got another planned weekend of furniture shopping coming up and then, probably more shopping after that, starting from scratch means he needs everything! It’s definitely fun piecing everything together though.

While shopping on Sunday my boyfriend got a phone call he had to take, so instead of awkwardly standing around until he finished I ran into Lucy. I’d never heard of this store before but I need some more running gear and I figured it didn’t hurt to look.

Well most everything in the store was out of my budget until I found the clearance section, plus they were having a sale of an additional 30% off clearance items! I managed to nab an electric blue tank top and a pair of running leggings that will be perfect for the fall weather coming up for just under $40. I’m excited to see how they work out for me. I’ll be trying out the tank top out soon for sure.

My new running outfit!
My new running outfit!

After shopping for two days straight, we decided to unwind on my boyfriend’s deck with a freshly grilled meal (that I neglected to photograph because I was starving) and a glass of wine for myself (or maybe 2). Then we finished the movie Ira & Abby which we had started the day before but couldn’t finish because I fell asleep.

It was a good movie, very funny and kind of different, which I enjoyed. I thought the ending was weird, and I didn’t really like it my boyfriend agreed, but overall, if you’re looking for something to watch it’s a solid option.

I really wish it weren’t Monday, and I’m secretly glad I have dinner plans with a friend tonight that means I get the day off from running, but I’ll be back at it tomorrow, I’m hoping to run at least 6 miles!
